Even decades later, in the 1970s, she found a new audience playing the iconic theme for the snooker show, *Pot Black*.
Her connection to London ran deep. In 1956, she opened one of Brixton's first hair salons catering to the growing Afro-Caribbean community, a site now proudly marked by a Nubian Jak plaque. And a piece of London literally traveled the world with her: her beloved “other piano,” a second-hand upright bought from Battersea, which she played alongside her grand piano on stages everywhere. Such was her fame that her incredible hands were insured for a whopping £40,000 with Lloyds of London!
It's almost unbelievable that it took until 2025 for Winifred Atwell to receive an official English Heritage Blue Plaque at her former Mayfair home. Unveiled by musical luminaries Jools Holland and YolanDa Brown, this recognition highlights her immense influence on artists like Elton John and countless others.
