Kentish Town’s Belly: Filipino Flavour Bombs Meet French Bistro
A Unique Culinary Gem in Kentish Town
Kentish Town is buzzing with a new culinary gem, Belly, a restaurant that's been quietly captivating palates and earning a reputation as a must-visit local spot. For a while, this exciting addition has been on the hit list for many, and with good reason. Billed as a French bistro serving innovative Filipino dishes, Belly has successfully defied expectations with its eclectic menu. Many, including ourselves, initially harboured concerns that such a fusion might lead to an overly complex culinary experience with too many clashing ingredients. However, Belly proves this fear unfounded, demonstrating a masterful command of flavour and balance that results in genuinely cohesive and exciting dishes. From the moment you step in, the establishment radiates a unique “hustle,” marrying an energetic ambiance with faultless food and drink offerings. This neighbourhood eatery has truly “got everything down,” quickly becoming a cornerstone of the local dining scene and adding a distinct flavour and unique appeal to Kentish Town's already diverse offerings, attracting food lovers looking for something truly different right on their doorstep. It's a testament to the vibrant culinary spirit thriving outside of central london attractions.
Flavour Bombs and Culinary Creativity
Belly’s menu is a testament to the phrase “all killer, no filler,” offering a parade of dishes that are both inventive and deeply satisfying. We began our culinary journey with the smoked trout kinilaw, a Filipino take on ceviche, which delighted with its bright acidity, balanced by the creamy richness of coconut milk. Another standout, often selling out fast due to its popularity, is the tempura cod pandesal – a truly elevated version of a classic fish sandwich, enhanced with ikura tartare, offering a playful yet sophisticated twist. For a heartier option, the woodland mushroom arroz caldo, available in two sizes, delivers rich, earthy flavours thanks to meaty mushrooms and a luscious egg yolk, perfect for a comforting meal. The daily fish, served tinapa-style with a complex sauce Américaine, tomato, strawberry XO, and calamansi vinegar, was a triumph of perfectly cooked fish in an incredible, multi-layered sauce. Don’t overlook the simple yet sublime Pink Fir potatoes with kombu sauce, and certainly save room for the unforgettable frozen custard profiterole, served with an unexpected yet exquisite fish sauce caramel that proves dessert can be both daring and delicious.
Vibrant Atmosphere and Local Appeal
The innovation extends beyond the kitchen to Belly’s drinks menu, where classic cocktails receive a brilliant Filipino spin, like the Thai Basil and Lemongrass Gimlet featuring a surprising yet delightful umami hit from patis fish sauce. An impressive selection of non-alcoholic options, such as the refreshing Snake Fruit Spritz, ensures everyone finds a perfect pairing. The wine list, focusing on low-intervention options from family-owned vineyards, further elevates the dining experience. On a bustling Saturday, the atmosphere was electric – packed and vibey, yet service remained exceptionally slick and efficient, seamlessly managing walk-ins and turning tables with an energy that rivals some of the best london attractions. This unique culinary destination in Kentish Town offers a refreshing alternative to the bustling tourist hotspots around Trafalgar Square, proving that local gems can create just as much, if not more, excitement. It's the kind of place that adds to the vibrancy of london events and local culture, drawing diners from across the city to experience its seriously delicious and unique offering, making it a true standout in London’s dynamic food scene.
